This building’s importance to the community and its longevity goes beyond its intriguing history as it has also withstood a devastating fire in the 1980s that destroyed the original roof and portions of the interior, not to mention several earthquakes in between. In 2012, Onyx was commissioned to help redesign the building’s interior and return the space closer to its original condition including rehabilitating portions of the fire-damaged original velodrome track interior wall siding. Onyx worked with the Pasadena Public Works Department, the La Casita Foundation, and the City of Pasadena Historic Preservation staff to develop a cohesive design approach that will harken the building’s original condition while making modern improvements to lighting, kitchen appliances, and restrooms that also meet current accessibility requirements.
