ONYX is working alongside families rebuilding homes lost to the Eaton Fire in Altadena. Each residence is shaped as much by memory as by what comes next.
The January 2025 fires took more than structures. They took the places where decades of family life, music, faith, and friendship had unfolded, many of them beloved mid-century originals that defined this hillside community for generations. For the homeowners we are working with, the decision to rebuild is an act of commitment to Altadena and to the neighbors returning alongside them. Our role is to listen first, then to design residences that honor the spirit of what stood before while meeting the realities of what comes next.

Many of these projects are reimaginings of the original homes. We work to preserve the scale, materials, and indoor-outdoor ease that defined a distinctly Southern California way of living, while quietly updating the details for how families live today.

Rebuilding in a fire-prone hillside demands more than resilience; it demands intention. Each residence integrates non-combustible materials, defensible site zoning, and thoughtful water retainage, paired with on-site solar and battery storage, so these homes are built to endure and to take less from the grid in the process.
No home comes back alone. As the streetscape slowly restores and neighbors return, these residences are designed to contribute to the collective recovery, respecting the scale and rhythm of the original neighborhood so Altadena can come back as itself.

We are grateful to the families who have trusted us with this work, and to the wider community of builders, engineers, officials, and neighbors making this recovery possible. Altadena’s story is long and layered, and it deserves to be stewarded with care.
