City of Hope Medical Office Building
The Medical Group from City of Hope medical center was looking for additional outpatient treatment facilities in the area nearby its main facility in Duarte. The warehouse building considered for the design was a windowless and featureless concrete structure, situated along a sliver of land adjacent to the light rail tracks. The challenge was to convert it into the proposed treatment center and doctors' offices. Innovative design approaches were used: a circular opening in the roof to provide a courtyard environment at the entryway; slotted window openings situated within the concrete tilt-up walls to bring in natural light.
